As we wait patiently for the next BMW 5-Series, an image has surfaced on Instagram showing the luxury sedan's rear end completely undisguised. From the photo, we are able to see a much slimmer pair of tallights inspired by newer BMW models, along with cleaner lines and new recessed door handles that also take inspiration from the brand's latest designs. Other notable changes include a gloss black roof and a larger greenhouse that now seems to extend beyond the rear doors, while the iconic Hofmeister kink is still visible but less pronounced.

Judging from camouflaged prototypes, the 5-Series will take on a very normal appearance compared to other BMW models. The kidney grilles won't dominate the front fascia, nor will there be any weird split headlights like what we've seen on the 7-Series or XM. Overall, we expect the 5-Series to look very similar to the latest X1 crossover, bearing a design that doesn't spark controversy.

That's not to say the next 5-Series will be boring behind the wheel. Compared to its Mercedes E-Class archrival, this BMW will have a much sportier driving demeanor. The top-of-the-line M5 performance model is expected to pump out 700 horsepower, which is a 100-hp advantage compared to the current M5. There will also be an all-electric i5 variant for the first time ever, with the base i5 eDrive40 making 335 horsepower from an RWD setup, while a dual-motor i5 M60 xDrive will make 590 hp while sending power to all four wheels.

The next-generation 5-Series will make its official debut next month, with production starting this summer ahead of its launch in October.

Are you looking forward to the next 5-Series?
