Chevrolet has completely overhauled its Traverse three-row for the 2024 model year. The latest generation of the SUV goes for a much more rugged personality, with a chieseled look similar to the larger, body-on-frame Tahoe. Other highlights include a new turbocharged engine, an off-road Z71 trim, and plenty of tech. The three-row Chevy goes on sale in early 2024.
The updated design builds on the split headlights and squarer grille introduced on the last refresh, while adding more muscular lines and shorter overhangs. The Traverse's trucky new looks are most clear on the new Z71 variant, which adds more than an inch of ground clearance and a wider track for improved performance beyond the pavement. Its exclusively-designed front fascia makes for a better approach angle, and there are also built-in tow hooks, 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, and aluminum skid plates. Other mechanical adjustments, like its unique twin-clutch all-wheel drive system and trim-specific dampers, mean this isn't just a design package.
Meanwhile, the sportier Traverse RS returns for a new generation with exclusive badging and gloss black detailing. The dark accents are found on the grille, roof rails, and moldings, and are paired with black 22-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, the RS adopts a flat-bottom steering wheel as well as bright red accents, and can also be equipped with leather upholstery, a power-folding second row, and a unique lighting animation to welcome the driver. As for all trims, the Traverse adds two new exterior colors for 2024, which include Lakeshore Blue and Harvest Bronze.
Chevrolet's interiors have undergone massive improvements in recent years, and the Traverse hops on that trend with a much classier cabin. The main highlight is the new infotainment system, which measures a whopping 17.7 inches. That's an increase of 10.7 inches compared to last year's model, which featured a miniscule 8-inch screen. Meanwhile, a large 11-inch instrument display, which appears small next to the central touchscreen, sits in front of the driver. As for our own devices, the Traverse offers six standard USB ports, while wireless charging and a WiFi hotspot are available as options. Chevrolet has also added Super Cruise hands-free driving to its three-row SUV.
While the latest Traverse has made vast improvements in terms of tech, there are also notable improvements in the materials and switchgear. The center console adopts a much cleaner design, which is mostly thanks to the new shifter, which moves to the steering column. There's also a pass-through storage compartment below the center console, allowing for more small-item storage. Elsewhere, the Traverse gains shiny new controls and revised cabin materials.
The latest Traverse remains a strong player in terms of space, and it still offers buyers seven- or eight-seat configurations, depending on trim level. It's worth noting that most of the trims come standard with the second-row captain's chairs, which means most Traverse models will have seven seats. Higher trims, including the Traverse RS, come standard with a one-touch folding second row and a power-folding third row. Cargo space with the seats down measures in at 97.6 cubic feet, which actually slightly less than last year. However, accessing the trunk will now be a bit easier as there is a newly available AutoSense power liftgate.
Chevrolet was shy to give us many equipment details, but we do know that the new Traverse will have optional heated outboard seats in the first and second rows, a heated steering wheel, and heated exterior mirrors.
The 2024 Traverse is no longer powered by a 3.6 liter V6, following many other new SUVs in ditching their large-displacement engines for smaller ones assisted by turbo or hybrid systems. In place of the V6, Chevy has equipped the latest Traverse with a turbocharged 2.5 liter four-cylinder. It makes 315 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, which turns out to be notably more than the previous V6. In fact, the new numbers beat the majority of today's three-row SUVs. The new four-cylinder is mated to an eight-speed automatic, which can send power to either the front wheels or all four, though this depends on which model you choose. Fuel economy is a mystery as of this writing, but Chevy did provide the SUV's towing capacity, which is rated at up to 5,000 pounds.
The new Traverse also places a large emphasis on safety. Along with the previously mentioned addition of Super Cruise, there's a new Buckle to Drive feature, which ensures that both front passengers are buckled in before driving. Not only that, but the new Rear Seat Belt Reminder function looks to catch rear passengers in the act when they remove their seatbelts. While these are a couple of notable new features, the 2024 Traverse features a vast array of active safety features onboard.
Production of the 2024 Traverse will take place early next year at the Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant in Michigan. Pricing hasn't been revealed yet, but the current model begins at around $35,000, so expect something slightly north of that estimate.
Would you buy this Traverse over a Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade?
