Mercedes has gone all out on its fully electric offerings, as it already has five of them on sale in the United States. However, the automaker has recently pledged to give buyers the option to take the transition slower with the addition of more hybrid models. Now, a plug-in hybrid variant is being added to the popular GLC compact crossover for 2025, and U.S. buyers will receive it during the second half of this year.

The GLC350e features a 24.8-kWh battery pack along with a single 134-hp electric motor. Under the hood lies a 2.0 liter engine making 201 hp, but that's as detailed as Mercedes is willing to get about the gas engine––it's safe to assume that it's a watered-down version of the GLC300's turbo-four. All together, this plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers 313 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels, and acceleration from 0-60 takes 6.6 seconds.

The plug-in hybrid GLC is said to have an electric-only range of around 81 miles based on Europe's WLTP cycle, though EPA range could be rated at about 70 miles. In EV mode, the crossover can reach a top speed of 87 mph––that raises to 135 mph when the gas engine kicks in. The GLC350e is equipped with an electromechanical brake booster as opposed to a hydraulic system, which Mercedes says allows the SUV to reach its max 100-kW braking regeneration more often.

Since this isn't a regular self-charging hybrid, recharging the battery requires a visit to an EV charging station. Using a DC fast charger will allow the battery to charge at up to 60 kW in about 30 minutes, while using a more conventional AC charger has the battery charging at up to 11 kW. For the 2025 model year, the GLC350e will come equipped with a CCS charging port, but after that it will switch to Tesla's NACS port, allowing access to the Supercharger network.

The 350e is identical to the rest of the GLC lineup inside and out, and it's equipped as one of the range-topping models. That means you'll get a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 11.9-inch central touchscreen display, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless start, and a blind spot monitor as standard. But if you have extra money to spend, the plug-in GLC does come in three trim levels. Moving up to the Exclusive trim adds a surround-view camera system and a Burmester surround sound audio setup, while opting for the top-of-the-line Pinnacle will give you heat and noise insulating glass, a head-up display, and an upgraded infotainment display that can stream music or video.

The GLC350e also provides access to the "Mercedes me Charge" service, which unlocks over 60,000 chargers under a single payment, and owners are given an RFID card for public charging stations from EVgo, Electrify America, and ChargePoint.

Mercedes hasn't yet disclosed U.S. pricing for the 2025 GLC350e, so expect those details to come closer to the SUV's release in the second half of this year.
