The luxury coupe SUV segment is a niche one, though that space is getting quite crowded over at BMW. That's especially true with the recent introduction of the second-generation X2, which has transformed the small crossover into a more coupe-like shape while also causing it to grow in size. That means there are now three coupe-like crossovers in BMW showrooms, but it won't be that way for long.

BMW has announced that the X4 is departing soon, as there's hardly any room in between the new X2 and the larger X6. While there will be no direct replacement for the X4 as we know it, BMW will continue to offer a compact, rear-wheel drive layout in the form of the more traditional X3, which has just received a redesign of its own––this time, without the slant-roofed X4. Meanwhile, those who are adamant about a coupe SUV at a price point similar to the X4 will still have the X2, which has front-wheel drive instead and is a bit smaller, but buyers in this segment usually don't consider space or drivetrains anyway.

While the automaker has confirmed the X4's demise, it hasn't specified exactly when production will end. It's safe to say it will bite the dust as soon as the next-generation X3 begins shipping to dealers, which will be towards the end of this year.

But if you thought you would never have to see the X4 nameplate again, you would be wrong. While it's the end of the line for the combustion-powered model we know today, the coupe-like crossover will eventually be revived as one of BMW's forthcoming Neue Klasse electric models. The iX3 is due in 2025 as the first vehicle to come from that architecture, though the iX4 isn't supposed to join it until around 2027.

Nonetheless, BMW still has plenty of options for those seeking a stylish crossover from its showrooms. Not only is there an entire lineup of traditional SUVs available, but there are still two coupe SUVs left, and those who absolutely will not settle for anything other than an X4 (which would be next to no one) can at least wait for when the electric iX4 arrives in a few years.

Now that the X2 has grown and switched to a coupe format, there is no need for the X4.
