Bugatti has taken the wraps off its latest one-off creation for the Chiron, which it calls "Golden Era." Said to be one of the "most challenging" bespoke projects the company has created, it was commissioned through Bugatti's Sur Mesure program for a "very important customer" who reached out from a dealership located in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The exterior alone took the automaker over 400 hours to complete, and the project was led by Achim Anscheidt, who recently retired from Bugatti's lead designer position. He said that one-off commissions like this one are "exceedingly rare," with one or two of these bespoke cars requested at most each year. This special Chiron features no less than 45 sketches of Bugatti's past models, with the exterior sketches hand-drawn over a bespoke two-tone paint job. The artistic tribute to the brand's history continues inside the cabin, where you'll find even more hand-crafted sketches of the brand's supercars.
According to Bugatti, this client wanted to "pay homage" to the brand's history and its legendary W16 engine, with a special celebration based on the Chiron Super Sport. When the design team presented the idea of hand-drawn sketches applied directly to the Chiron's bodywork, the customer "immediately fell in love with the idea." While the concept sounds simple, Bugatti had to ensure that these sketches would stand the test of time, along with a perfect finish. Anscheidt says it "took more patience and craftsmanship than you could ever imagine."
Each individual sketch was refined on paper until it reached the right scale and proportion, and only then was each complex drawing applied directly to the car by hand. Under the pressure of creating perfect artwork directly on a one-off Bugatti, designers used nothing more than pencils to produce each sketch. Unsurprisingly, this laborious process took more than 400 hours to finish.
The sketches are derived from nearly every chapter of Bugatti's history books, from the days of Ettore Bugatti to the company's eventual rebirth in 1987. As a result, there are 19 sketches on the driver's side, which include modern icons like the EB110, Veryon, Chiron, La Voiture Noire, Centiodieci, and Divo, while the passenger's side goes further back in time with 26 sketches that include the Type 57SC Atlantic and Type 41 Royale. As a base for the sketches, Bugatti used a bespoke gold paint called Doré, which fades into a shade of metallic Nocturne Black that covers the front end of the vehicle. Other exterior details include a depiction of the 3,712 components that make up the Chiron's W16 engine, along with "Golden Era" writing at the bottom of the active rear wing.
The bespoke sketches continue on into the cabin, where the each of the leather door panels features portrayals of three Bugatti models. The driver's side mimics the exterior in highlighting the company's more recent supercars, with the EB110, Veyron, and Chiron. The passenger side features the Type 57SC Atlantic, Type 41 Royale, and the Type 35 race car. The cabin is upholstered with elegant brown leather, which is paired with matte carbon fiber pieces. To further highlight the exclusivity of this one-off Chiron Super Sport, the seats feature "Golden Era" stitching on the headrests, along with "one-of-one" handwritten on the center console. Additionally, the driver and passenger sides respectively feature "1987-2023" and "1909-1956" written on the side sills to highlight the active years of the original Bugatti company and today's revived counterpart.
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Golden Era will meet its exclusive owner at Monterey Car Week, and will spend the rest of its time at the event on display with other supercars. Bugatti didn't disclose the price of the Golden Era model, but considering the incredible bespoke touches it features, it's likely priced at much more than the $3.5 million ask for the standard Chiron Super Sport. Also keep in mind that this is one of just 60 Super Sport models being built, out of the total 500 Chiron models ever produced.
