Ever since production of the Honda S2000 roadster ended in 2009, rumors claiming its return have been an on-and-off affair. Now, with the Japanese automaker preparing to celebrate its 75th anniversary this year, rumor mills are almost certain that something is on the way, especially considering that the original S2000 first arrived for Honda's 50th anniversary.

Citing company insiders, CAR Magazine claims that the reborn S2000 will be fully electric, riding on Honda's new e:N architecture. Interestingly, the report suggests that the sports car will initially debut with a front-wheel drive layout, but will eventually expand its powertrain offerings to include rear- and all-wheel drive variants.

An even sportier Type R variant could be in the works as well. It will most likely have dual electric motors, with one for each axle, as the report notes that the S2000 will be Honda's "second non-front-wheel drive car to sport the [Type R] moniker."

While it remains to be seen whether a new S2000 does in fact arrive this year, Honda did tease two electric sports cars last year, with one said to be a "flagship" replacement for the Acura NSX (branded as the Honda NSX in some markets), and the other, smaller one rumored to be a new S2000. That being said, an S2000 revival is almost definitely on the way, regardless of when it actually launches.

The new electric sports car might even spawn a sportier Type R variant.
