After a promising report from Car and Driver pointed to the return of the V8 engine in the Mercedes-AMG C63 and E63 sedans, citing unnamed sources from directly inside the company, additional insider souces speaking to Auto Motor und Sport have shot down the rumor. "This is sheer nonsense," said one product development employee to the German magazine.

Assuming these new sources are correct, that means we will not be seeing a new hybridized V8 to replace the plug-in hybrid inline-four and inline-six engines. This comes despite reports that these smaller engines are deterring buyers and fans away from the brand, pushing them instead to crosstown rivals Audi and BMW. It's worth noting that both of those companies are still building high-displacement engines, but with hybrid power added on.

That's exactly what Car and Driver said AMG would do, with unnamed AMG engineers claiming that the M177 twin-turbo V8 found in previous C63 and E63 models would return with a new hybrid system bolted on. Meanwhile, newer sources related to AMG product development, specifically "engine design for the AMG versions of the C and E-Class as well as the CLE," report that plans for the C63 and E63 powertrains will not be changing, and that "no V8 is coming."
