The new Toyota Land Cruiser will be powered by a 2.4 liter hybrid four-cylinder, which should allow for a major jump in fuel economy over the previous model’s V8. And if a sneaky caption displayed on the brand's website is any indication, the reborn SUV could return a whopping 27 mpg combined.
The section has since been deleted from Toyota's Land Cruiser preview page, but not before TFL Trucks laid eyes on it. Under the "Performance" section of the page, the automaker detailed the exact output provided by the SUV's i-Force Max powertrain, and for the first time, displayed its estimated fuel economy rating of 27 mpg combined. While it's not an official rating from the EPA, anything near this estimate would still blow the likes of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler out of the water. And considering that the Land Cruiser's engine is also shared by the latest Toyota Tacoma, that rating could apply to the midsize pickup as well.
This could perhaps explain Toyota's decision to shove a four-cylinder under the hood instead of a larger six-cylinder, a choice that was under scrutiny when the Land Cruiser was first revealed. The i-Force Max powertrain takes a conventional hybrid setup, meaning it doesn't need to be plugged in, and generates a considerable 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The new Land Cruiser mates this powertrain to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and also features a four-wheel drive system.
The new Land Cruiser should begin arriving at U.S. dealers sometime next year, with its official fuel economy rating likely to surface before then.
