It's no secret that the next-generation BMW M3 will spawn an EV variant for the first time when it arrives around 2027. However, there have been fears that the combustion engine would get lost in all the EV noise––er, silence. But luckily, a new report ensures that there is still a future for the gas-fed M3, as the next sports sedan, codenamed G84, will continue to offer the current model's S58 engine, albeit with slight modifications.
According to BMW Blog, the G84 M3 will launch in 2027 or 2028, offering buyers a choice of either a gas or electric powertrain. The gas model in particular will continue using the 3.0 liter twin-turbo six-cylinder found under the hood of today's G80 model, though there will be some updates to keep Euro 7 compliance in check. Whether or not that means there will be hybrids involved remains to be seen.
The G84 M3 will continue using the CLAR modular platform that underpins the majority of BMW's current lineup, though the fully electric version will switch to the upcoming Neue Klasse architecture that's set to debut on the electric versions of the next 3-Series and X3. The Neue Klasse platform supports up to four motors and can endure up to 1,341 hp, and while we don't know exactly how much power the battery-powered M3 will pack, it will undoubtedly be more potent than the traditional ICE version.
While the familiar six-cylinder engine is returning for a new generation, another combustion-powered M4 is not. Unfortunately, it seems that the two-door performance car will not live beyond its current form, at least with a gas engine under the hood. There could be a successor with battery power only, though the report doesn't confirm nor deny this.
Meanwhile, the current-generation M3 and M4 are expected to stick around until spring of 2027. This comes after the M4 debuted a light mid-cycle refresh earlier this year, and the M3 is due to follow suit.
