While it's been speculated that the Porsche Panamera would not see another generation in the electric era, as it would interfere with the similarly-sized Taycan, the automaker does not believe that the two four-door models will overlap each other. In fact, it is planning a Panamera EV that will sit alongside the Taycan at some point.

While speaking with Autocar, Kevin Giek––who holds the position of Vice President of the Taycan Product Line––confirmed that both models will coexist peacefully with one another. Giek says the Taycan will be a "long-lasting" model, much like the rest of its lineup. Hinting at what's next for the sporty four-door, he continued that Porsche will "keep the Taycan as an innovator, to show what is possible and what is our definition of a BEV sports car. We will continue to improve the car all the time." Since the Taycan just received its first mid-cycle refresh, a full redesign won't come until the end of the decade.

It's true that the Panamera and Taycan share similar dimensions––the Taycan is only 3.5 inches short of the Panamera, and its wheelbase is just 2 inches shorter. However, Porsche orients these models for different types of customers. "They are obviously different. Both have the right [position] on the market. Both make sense and we are sure we have the customers," Giek said. The Panamera offers slightly more space inside, and is more focused on luxury. Meanwhile, the Taycan is a bit faster and is marketed as a more of a performance-oriented model.

Oddly enough, the differences between the Taycan and Panamera continue with their available body styles. While they obviously both take the form of a four-door sedan as standard, the Taycan goes a bit further with its Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo wagon variants. The Panamera used to be offered as a handsome Sport Turismo wagon, but the latest generation marks the demise of that model.

The next-generation Panamera won't arrive until at least 2030, as its latest redesign has just hit the market. However, when it does arrive, it will offer a fully-electric powertrain and follow the redesigned Taycan expected around 2028. The next Taycan will place an even larger emphasis on its sporty character, and Giek confirmed that it won't share the PPE architecture that underpins the new Macan EV. "PPE is a perfect SUV platform, but Taycan is not an SUV," he said.
