Mini's potent John Cooper Works badge has been added to an EV for the first time, but unlike its gas counterparts, the JCW moniker adds no extra spice. It may look hot on the outside (especially with that Chili Red roof), and that's because it's little more than an appearance package. Those who want a Mini that lives up to the JCW name will have to wait for the updated gas Cooper that's expected sometime in 2024.

The JCW at least gets the better of the Cooper EV's two available powertrains, and that's the 215-hp version found in the SE. Its front-mounted motor is paired with a 54.2-kWh battery pack, which in turn delivers up to 250 miles of range. Luckily, it appears that the JCW's sportier body kit will have no effect on that estimate.

Cosmetic upgrades include a meaner front fascia, a set of side skirts, ten-spoke 18-inch wheels, and a large diffuser in back. Additionally, the JCW adds a bright shade of red for the roof, mirror caps, brake calipers, and hood stripes. The same red color scheme continues into the cabin, where the seats are adorned with red contrast stitching, and the dashboard features an eye-catching checkered flag design.

Details on the U.S.-spec Cooper EV remain scarce, but the inclusion of the sportier JCW variant in the lineup is very likely. But what's even more likely is an updated version of the gas-powered Cooper JCW, which will offer actual performance upgrades alongside a similar exterior glow-up. Expect the new Cooper to arrive on U.S. shores in both gas and electric form in late 2024, just in time for the 2025 model year.

The JCW is strictly an appearance package on the EV, but the gas version will offer some extra punch.
