While we last saw Fiat's iconic supermini on our shores in 2019, the 500 has been living on in Europe as the fully-electric 500e. We've been told that the latest 500 would be hitting U.S. roads again at some point, and Fiat has now officially announced its return for 2024.
The new 500e is nearly identical to the one on sale overseas. It features a tiny 42.0-kWh battery pack that enables up to 149 miles of EPA-estimated range, and charging it from 0 to 80 percent will take as much as 35 minutes using a DC fast charger. The Fiat's electric powertrain propells it to deliver 118 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Clearly, this hatchback is meant for city use, but its charming styling will be welcomed nonetheless.
While other colors and trims will become available in the future, the initial batch of U.S.-bound cars will be (RED) editions. As the name suggests, these models are finished in a bright shade of red both inside and out, and they also feature dazzling 17-inch wheels with a 24-spoke "diamond-cut" design. Inside, there's a 10.3-inch touchscreen mounted on the center of the dash, and it supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Among the rest of the standard features are LED headlights, a wireless smartphone charger, lane-keeping assist, and rain-sensing wipers. Note that the (RED) Edition helps to support Product Red, which raises funds for research on HIV and AIDS.
The first 500e models are expected to arrive in the U.S. in early 2024, each with a $34,095 asking price. It remains to be seen whether future trims will be cheaper, but for now American customers can place an order for the (RED) Edition as long as their signed up for the brand's FiatPass digital membership card.
