Volvo's rapidly-expanding lineup of EVs is about to extend to its sedan range, starting with the flagship S90. Its electric successor, which will likely adopt the ES90 moniker, is expected to arrive as soon as this year, and it's currently undergoing pre-production testing.

A Swedish publication known as Teknikens Värld claims that the first pre-production ES90, codenamed 'V551', left the assembly line as a "Verification Car" that will face Volvo's rigorous final leg of testing. Official production is said to start as soon as May 2024.

The report packs plenty of information about the ES90, including that it will be underpinned by the SPA2 platform currently used by the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90, and production will take place at one of the Chinese production facilities owned by parent company Geely. In fact, the report claims that it's the "first new global model where development has been carried out under the direction of the engineering team in Shanghai," and the ES90 is said to have been developed alongside Geely's other upcoming sedans, including the Galaxy E8 and Zeekr 007.

The sedan will also use a 111-kWh battery pack, again shared with the EX90. Autocar claims that this battery will be paired with either a single, rear-mounted motor or a dual-motor all-wheel drive system. Range is estimated to reach up to 373 miles, likely on the single-motor version.

In terms of dimensions, the ES90 is said to measure 196.5 inches in length. While that's several inches shorter than the current S90, the EV's longer 122.1-inch wheelbase means that the cabin could still offer more space over its predecessor. The sedan will also be a bit wider and taller than before, at 76.6 inches wide and 60.9 inches tall.

When the Volvo ES90 arrives later this year, it's expected to compete with the Audi A6 e-tron, BMW i5, and Mercedes EQE.
