GMC has a decent amount of SUVs and pickups, including the Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Sierra and Canyon, all of them being available with the rugged AT4 package and luxurious Denali trim. The Hummer SUV/SUT is also making a return under this brand. But, plans for a Buick Encore-sized crossover were dropped just about a year ago. Rumors now suggest that GMC is reconsidering the plans, since the Buick Encore GX, Cadillac XT4, Ford Escape and Chevrolet Trailblazer are all doing rather well. It was originally going to be inspired by the Granite concept, but GMC has moved on to a different design language since then.
Production hasn't been approved yet, but if it is, expect it to run on the TAS-F platform that underpins GM's other small crossovers, and an MSRP below $25,000. GMC states that the vehicle will "highly differentiate" from Chevy, Cadillac and Buick's offerings. We don't know what it will look like, since it will no longer be based on the 2009 Granite concept. Speaking of Granite, GMC recently filed for trademarks on the 'Granite' and 'Graphyte' names, which could have been reserved for this very model.
Since the production Granite (or Graphyte) has not been approved yet, we might have to wait a long while before we see it. In the mean time, the Hummer is coming this fall.
