After the EU banned the illuminated Mercedes logo seen on most of their cars, as well as Rolls Royce's glowing Spirit of Ecstasy, both brands had to ditch those cool features for good. Mercedes' light-up logo is still available in the US, but it looks like we have to compromise as well. Mercedes secretly got rid of the hood ornament option on the 2021 E-Class sedan in the US. That is bad news for those who want the prestigious three-star logo to sit atop their new E-Class.
After noticing that the hood ornament option disappeared from the 'Luxury' trim level on the 2021 E-Class configurator, Motortrend reached out to Mercedes, who confirmed that the hood ornament has been discontinued from the E-Class. That leaves the S Class and Maybach GLS as the only models with hood ornaments, at least in the US.
The hood ornament lives on in Europe with the 'Elegance' trim.
With every new model, the Mercedes logo grows bigger and bigger on the grille, while the hood ornament shrinks. With the hood ornament-less new E-Class, the only remains are a tiny Mercedes logo stamped onto the sheetmetal that sits in between the hood and grille. If you want your new E-Class to have a hood ornament, you'll just have to find a 2018-2020 example.
