Porsche has revealed a special edition 911 Targa, which marks the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design. If you're thinking of the firm that designs the latest Porsche cars, you are mistaken. Porsche Design actually makes expensive watches, inspired by the company's sports cars.
With just 750 units being built worldwide, this 911 is one of a kind. Rather than making a watch inspired by a car, Porsche has made a car inspired by a watch. To be more specific, this 911 Targa is based on the first Porsche Design watch, called the Chronograph 1. The Chronograph 1 was finished in black, so all 750 of these 911's will feature black exterior paint, and a high gloss black finish on the brake calipers. Satin Platinum has been added elsewhere, including the 20- or 21-inch center-locking Turbo S rims, Porsche Design emblems on the doors, and the iconic Targa bar. Additionally, a badge found on the engine grille reads 50 Years Porsche Design.
There are also exclusive features throughout the cabin, such as a numbered silver badge found on the dashboard that shows the special production number, since every unit is one out of just 750. On the center console lid, the signature of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, Porsche Design founder and son of Ferry Porsche, is embossed. Dual-tone Sport-Tex seating in Black and Cool Grey is included, with a checked pattern and exclusive headrests embossed with a 50 Years Porsche Design badge. The Slate Grey GT Sport steering wheel with a center marker is also standard in this special edition.
Though the Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design is based on the 911 Targa GTS, customers are treated to a larger roster of standard equipment. Slate Grey seats belts match the GT Sport steering wheel, and complement the 18-way Adaptive Sport Seats Plus seating. The Sport Chrono package upgrades to a Porsche Design Subsecond clock with a red second hand to match Porsche Design's 50th anniversary watches. This Porsche Design 911 also has an enhanced driving experience. Although the 473-hp twin-turbo flat-six engine goes unchanged, the Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive is marked as standard. An eight-speed PDK transmission is standard as well, but buyers can also opt for a seven-speed manual with no additional cost. The PDK transmission includes standard Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, while the manual gearbox includes a PTV mechanically locking rear differential.
To mark the occasion Porsche Design also created two special edition timepieces: the Chronograph 1 911 50 Years of Porsche Design, and the Chronograph 1 1972 Limited Edition. The former is included with the car, and is inspired by the original Chronograph 1's design. It features a sapphire crystal case back, with a winding rotor that resembles the 911 Targa's wheel design. It has the current Porsche lettering and logos, and a numbered badge out of 750 to match the car. The total MSRP of the car and its watch is $195,850 without the $1,350 delivery, processing, and handling fee. Porsche says the special edition 911 Targas will arrive at dealers this spring. Meanwhile, the latter timepiece is sold separately for $7,700. It is essentially a carbon copy of the original Chronograph 1, and features the same size and design with a solid titanium case back and historic Porsche Design logos.
