The Mazda MX-30's Future Seems Bleak, 2022 Model Year Sold Out

The Mazda MX-30 can be credited for being the automaker's first EV, but there's not much else for this small crossover to brag about. Competitors are leaving the MX-30 in the dust in terms of range, as it only travels a dismal 100 miles on a single charge. So far, Mazda only offers the EV in California, and with reports that the 2022 model year sold out last month, we began to wonder if the brand is ready to give up on the MX-30 in the US, after just one year on sale.

Autoblog decided to reach out to Mazda regarding the MX-30's future in America, but the company's answer was vague.

"The introduction of the MX-30 EV in California was successful, and the model sold out in July. Five hundred and five of the planned 560 units were sold for the 2022 model year. The 2022 model year MX-30 production and U.S. sales were moderately impacted by production shortage. Mazda has not shared any new updates on this model. We cannot comment on future products but look forward to sharing further details regarding our electrification strategy soon."

It doesn't sound like Mazda is pulling the plug on the MX-30 in the immediate future, as customers in California seem to have received the electric crossover quite well despite its disappointing specs. When asked about a potential 2023 model, one of Mazda's representatives said, "Mazda hasn't yet shared any information on the 2023 model year MX-30." They went on to say that the automaker would give more details about its electric future soon.

The Japanese automaker has all but confirmed that a new range extender model is on the way, in order to bring the MX-30's performance more in line with competitors. A much more practical plug-in hybrid variant might also be in the cards, with rumors indicating that it might arrive as soon as next year. But even though the MX-30 still appears to have a purpose in the Mazda lineup, we wouldn't be surprised if the brand decided to kill it off earlier than what was initially planned.

Do you think the MX-30 still has a chance?
