Mini is all about small cars, meanwhile the world is focused on crossovers. Mini is now planning a crossover the size of BMW's popular X3. Currently, the Countryman is their only offering closest to a crossover. The other models, including the new electric Cooper SE, aren't as popular. Especially their most fun model, The Mini Convertible. We're not surprised, but it's sad.
But, you can still buy one, as the two-door droptop will reportedly end production in the United States when its current generation's time is up. That is not until February 2024. There is also a reason for such a faraway date.
Mini's convertible variant is still appealing to the public, even though it sits at the bottom of the sales chart with just around 4,000 of them finding homes in the States. The Mini Convertible also "requires more complexity to build" than the more iconic hatchback variant, and with crossover sales on the rise, convertible sales are plummeting. Non-luxury compact vehicles take just 9.2 percent of that segment, and customers that still admire convertibles usually choose a Camaro, Mustang, Mazda MX-5, or Nissan 370Z convertible.
To keep themselves appealing in the ever-changing auto industry, Mini is introducing more crossovers and EVs to their future lineup. The Mini Convertible just doesn't fit into their US lineup anymore.
